Alto Sewer Service is a licensed and bonded Subsurface Sewage Treatment System (SSTS) company that maintains septic systems by pumping, cleaning, and maintaining the tanks. We also replace pumps in pump tanks and waterjet drainfields.

Why is proper septic tank maintenance necessary?

Periodic removal of the solids in septic tanks will ensure long-term service of the SSTS. Without proper maintenance the sludge layer at the bottom of the tank, and the floating scum layer, will accumulate and begin to flow from the tank into the drainfield, leading to premature failure. A lack of proper maintenance can also result in a sewage backup into the home.

When is proper maintenance required?

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency requires a SSTS maintenance assessment at least once every three years by a licensed maintenance provider.

In addition to a visual inspection, here is a summary of what we check for when maintaining a septic system:

  • Tank Integrity
  • Scum Depth
  • Sludge Depth
  • Check for Leaks
  • Pump Tank Pump
  • Root Intrusion
  • Secure Manhole Cover(s)
  • Manhole/Riser Integrity
  • Baffle Integrity
  • Soil Treatment Area
  • Tank Level
  • Pump Tank Alarm
  • Inspection Pipes
  • System Overview
  • Remove all tank contents when necessary

If your septic system alarm goes off there could be an issue with the pump or the drainfield.

If the alarm goes off:

1. Silence the alarm

2. Call Alto Sewer Service right away.

***NOTE*** Your alarm should be set to go off below the level of a backup so there is still some room left in the tank. Use water sparingly or not at all until we arrive to avoid a backup into the house.
